Hippy Barfday, Martha Graham!

Martha Graham: Modern Dancer, Choreographer, Founder of Contemporary Dance (and a Midwesterner!!)

[Google Says Hippy Barfday, too!]

Let’s see what the Martha Graham Center of Contemporary Dance has to say about Google.

[from back to front]

The Doodle begins with the shrouded figure from Lamentation, Graham’s signature solo from 1930. Then radical, and now iconic, the solo contains the seeds of Graham’s revolution – from the gutsy, torso-driven movement to the stark, unadorned emotion and her desire to “chart a graph of the heart” with her dances. The innovative costume, a tube of stretchy wool, accentuates the torque and pull of the movement, becoming the sculptural evocation of grief itself.

The dancer then sweeps upright with an insouciant flip of the hair and becomes the essence of Satyric Festival Song from 1932. In this solo, Graham mocked her own serious reputation (gained through works such as Lamentation) and took inspiration from the clown figures used in Native American ritual. This figure represents the many masterpieces Graham created that grew out of her love of the unique space, rhythms, and culture of the American southwest.

With a spin onto the knees and a reach forward, the dancer brings us the joy and reverence for the earth from the Bride in Appalachian Spring. One of Graham’s most beloved works, the ballet was created in 1944. Graham and her collaborators, the composer Aaron Copland and the sculptor Isamu Noguchi, considered the work to be their contribution to the war effort. The Bride figure evokes Graham’s deep American roots, her remarkable relationship with American art and music, and her genius at creating works that spoke of real human concerns.

The Bride is followed by a ferocious jump, the dancer’s torso flung forward, hovering in a famous Graham “contraction”. This is one of the “Daughters of the Night,” from the chorus of Night Journey, premiered in 1947. She calls up the masterworks Graham created by twisting classic tales from Greek drama into searing contemporary narratives. Night Journey is also the ultimate example of Graham’s revolutionary manipulation of time on stage. In it, the story of Oedipus unfolds through flashback and memory in the mind of his mother and wife, Jocasta.

The high kick with a sweep of the skirt and the determined finish – feet planted firmly, head erect and focused – complete the Doodle with the young woman fromFrontier, another seminal solo from 1935. Frontier reminds us of Graham’s reverence for individualism and self-empowerment and of her unquenchable “appetite for the new”. She created 181 dances in the course of her life, constantly forging new frontiers in American art until her death at age 96 in 1991. The dance company she launched in 1926 continues to delight audiences around the world with performances of the great Graham masterworks.

Jurassic Park

Jurassic Park: How can you not be interested?  I love dinosaurs.  Everybody loves dinosaurs.  When I was younger, I wanted to be a paleontologist – best Halloween costume ever.

Did you know dinosaurs are musical?  In fact, they play a variety of instruments.  And hold dinosaur parties and dinosaur concerts.  Let’s talk to the head dinosaur: Jeff Goldblum/Jeff Mather.

Are you, in fact, breeding dinosaurs in your basement?

The only things breeding in our basement are leaks, seepage, many species of sewer molds, and musical prowess.

What is your favorite dinosaur?

I remember having a bunch of Brontosaurus toys when I was little. Plus we have a drawing of one in the basement with facts on it, and I always read it multiple times while I’m playing drums down there.

Tell me about some musical dinosaur friends:

We’ve had a ton of amazing bands play Jurassic Park. Last year, in its short life span, we had NYC’s Blissed Out and Chicago’s BIGCOLOUR, along with two and a half songs by Indy’s We Are Hex before the police came along. But this year has been far more successful as a venue, and we’ve had a great combination of touring acts and Indiana bands such as Reading Rainbow, husband&wife, Secret Colours, Osteoferocious, and Cast Spells, the solo project of Maps & Atlases’ Dave Davison. We had a full day Pop Festival with a bunch of bands, including Cleveland’s The Modern Electric and Spacer Ace, and Nashville’s Ranger. And all of our shows have shown local talent from Mike Reeb to Broken Light to YEARS to Dirty Rotten Sunshine and so much more.

And Upcoming Shows?

We don’t have any upcoming shows right now, but I’m going to be booking this summer for next fall!

(Best inquire now, folks!)

What are your plans for expansion?

I’ve had thoughts of renting a space and trying to do Jurassic Park elsewhere. But as crazy as this sounds, I think people like the basement atmosphere. I know it smells sometimes, and it can get really hot, but the intimacy can really add another level to the music experience. Plus, I think renting a space would be the start of my grades and money quickly decreasing.

Are you really Jeff Goldblum?

No, I am not Jeff Goldblum, but I am Henry Wu.

Carmen Miranda

Ayyyyy Caramba!

Cinco de Mayo = salsa dancing and tequila.

So I bought a cha-cha aerobic video that was on sale yesterday.

Someday I will dance like Carmen Miranda.

Until then, soak up her fruit-laden goodness.

Hot Cha Cha!

Burroughs vs. Bowie

There’s two men in my life that I respect a lot.  They spoke to me when I was sad and young, they told me it was okay to be a weirdo, and they even really, really encouraged me to paint my face, wear outrageous clothes, and speak like a schizo. I love them.

But enough gushy stuff. Here they are in all their glory:

William S. Burroughs : beat writer, heroin addict, and shot his wife.

David Bowie : musician, costume aficionado , and believed he was a spaceman.

Neither of these brief descriptions do these fabulous men justice.  Both are voices of sects of forgotten people; the outsiders, the underground, the subterraneans, the too-bright, and the all around weirdos.

They agreed to meet for a Rolling Stone Interview in 1974, mainly because they wanted to compare and contrast their magical abilities.

So, once upon a time, they collided.  I believe the atom bomb was created on this same day, and possibly the dinosaurs became extinct and scientists re-evaluate the Big Bang Theory.

The main points of this Interview are as follows:

-they agree they both like sexual liberation

-they agree the end of the world is coming soon

-they agree Chinese people possibly don’t have a soul

-they agree Andy Warhol is a lizard man

Future Legends: Moodrings

They’re dreamy, they’re dirty, and they’re all smoking in my bed. And you should know about ‘em!

Georgia natives, Moodrings are here with a message, “It’s Sweater Weather Forever!”

Being a fan of dream-pop (and sweaters) it wasn’t any wonder I was hooked on their lo-fi shoe gazin’ ways when I met them back in January. An impromptu house show at my abode brought together Moodrings and BIGCOLOUR for a weekend of galavantry and round robins here in Indianapolis.

Moods, gettin' down (!)

Needless to say, these boys know how to have a good time, but more importantly they’re pro at blending their work with play. And that’s easy to see, errr well hear when listening to their oh so tasty jams. They fill your head with intricate chord progressions, thumping bass lines, and melodic oohss and ahhs that will melt your hazy little brain. And their live performances can’t be beat! They bring electricity to the stage that really keys up the audience for something big. And then they deliver. I don’t know, maybe it’s that dip that really gets me (Tymb still has to teach us how he perfected such a groovy move)

Hopefully, Indianapolis will be graced by their presence once again someday soon. Fingers crossed, they’ll make it to play our summer festival in early July (please!)

But until then, I’ll be here, grooving to their cassette, in my sweater, forever.

Braids, Braids Free For All

Hey Gang, Boosta! here, excited to start littering Savannah’s blog with musical reviews crossing all spectrums of the soundwaves. Beneficial to you? Maybe. A chance for me to rant and rave? Absolutely.

So without further ado, let us begin with…

 BRAIDS

I stumbled upon this band awhile after seeing GOBBLE GOBBLE  play at a house show here in Indianapolis, at a time in my life where I was looking to be swept up, by what, I wasn’t too certain, until I heard Braids, a native band of Canada and I was hooked. They hit you hard with incredibly honest lyrics, pick you up and carry you through throbbing “space and time” layers and drop you into a place where you can lose yourself. Sound interesting? Give “Lemonade” a listen. Oh, and fella’s, prepare to have your heart broken by lead singer, Raphaelle Standell-Preston. Her voice is charming, contradictory and down right enchanting. (fergie and jesus have nothing on her) Seriously, the girl has range.

For a more insightful look into the mastery of their latest album “Native Speaker”, debates on filtering, yada yada, whatever it is you kids get a kick from, read a review, HERE

If you’re tumblin’ bout the internets, follow them: http://braidsbraidsbraids.tumblr.com/

And prepare yourself for a ride atop the chillwave.

Future Legends: BIGCOLOUR

Here’s some friends:

They’re nice.

Once upon a time, they booked a show at my house, site unseen, along with another band (Moodrings)

<<Sweater Weather ForEVER>>

My roommate and I had never met them before, but we ended up the best of friends.  They stayed the weekend and we had tons o’ fun.

They played last weekend at Jurassic Park with Reading Rainbow (a fabulous duo that I would like to find again someday).  After hauling ass through some pretty rough weather, we all finally made it back to le maison for a pancake & PBR                          all – nighter.

SLUMBER PARTY!

Future Legends: The Fresh & Onlys

The Fresh and Onlys in Bloomington:

Photography by Boosta!

Boosta!’s birthday bonanza fantastical night ~ thanks to Wyatt, Wymond, Wine-o, Wyoming, Viking man; whatever his name was and the rest of that lovely band for the special on-stage birthday wishes.  Boosta!, Miss Anna, and I apologized in our heads for ditching you without saying goodbye first.

Let me just say, there are serious perks for those that show up wayyy too early for small shows.  And for those that creep on strangers. And loan fountain pens.

Should they play at the upcoming fete/carnival/festival/bonanza/shindig/hoedown/revival meeting of those that rock aka “Super Summer Slumber Party 2011″ coming in late June at mi casa?

c’est possible.

Waterfall << shoegazing at some of its finest.
